The Post Doctoral Fellowship at Olympia House is a comprehensive clinical training experience. The fellowships are year-long full-time positions that begin in early September and end at the end of August the following year. Fellows will receive training and provide services in both the Olympia House Residential Treatment Center Program (RTC) and the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The residential facility provides detoxification and rehabilitation with lengths of stay from 30 days to 6 months. The IOP provides groups three hours per day with an average length of stay of 2 months. Clients range in age from 18 to 75 years old.

What you will learn: As a clinician in our program, you will be working from a bio-psycho-social-spiritual model of addiction treatment. This allows you the opportunity to learn about and treat all the elements of addiction including but not limited to detoxification, withdrawal, medication assisted treatment, neurobiology, co-morbid clinical disorders, histories of trauma, toxic family and relational systems, challenges with intimacy, the absence or excess of resources, and the lack of a sense of purpose in life.

Individual Therapy: As you are assigned a case load, you will work closely with your clients to help address, explore, and work on the complex issues associated with addiction. As head of a clinical team, you will also oversee communication with other program staff, coordinate treatment with a drug and alcohol counselor who is part of your treatment team, consult with medical staff, speak to outside providers, and conduct family and couples’ sessions. Everything you do will be based on a clinical understanding of addiction, a dynamic formulation of cases, and a treatment model that is unique to Olympia House. Fellows will have the ability to see residential clients two times per week for individual and family therapy. Fellows will have the ability to see outpatient clients once per week for individual and family therapy.

Group Therapy: You will be assigned a set of groups to conduct weekly group therapy. Some of the groups will be more process-oriented groups, others will be focused on providing psychoeducation and skills to clients. Learning about the therapeutic impact of the group process and developing group therapy skills will be part of the fellowship training. Some of the groups we provide in residential and outpatient treatment that you may help lead include process group, relapse prevention group, trauma group, boundaries group, cognitive behavioral therapy group, dialectical behavioral therapy group, and life skills group.

Training and Supervision: Training and Supervision will be provided at the facility. Each fellow will have 2 supervisors who are licensed psychologists with a specialty in substance use disorders. Each fellow will have two hours of individual supervision each week. Fellows will also participate in group supervision, didactic training, clinical case conference, grand rounds, shift exchanges, and staff meetings. Fellows will present at least one clinical case presentation and provide at least one didactic presentation to staff as part of their training. Special emphasis will be on the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

The Space: Olympia House is located on 140 acres of farmland in Sonoma County California. The rolling hills of the vast countryside create a unique and serene beauty whereby the land itself is a critical element of the healing process for the residents and the staff that spend time at Olympia House. We have farm animals on the property and staff bring their dogs to work. The residential program has three different housing locations on the property and the outpatient program is in a house directly adjacent to the residential center. Fellows are provided with office space, telephone, direct telephone number, computer and business cards that identify their credentials in accordance with rules governed by the California Board of Psychology. Clinical Supervisors are available to the Fellow whenever services are being provided.

Time: General hours for Fellows are 8am-4:30pm. Due to the 24/7 nature of the residential facility, Fellows should anticipate working one weekend day a week with a Sunday-Thursday schedule or a Tuesday-Saturday schedule. On-call hours are not expected. Fellows will have some autonomy and flexibility to adjust their schedule if needed due to life circumstances. The main responsibility is to meet with your clients. How you schedule your clients will be primarily decided between you and your clients, not by the program. You do have the option to adjust the number of clients you see early or late in the day or early or late in the week based on personal needs. We will try to accommodate and support you as much as we can.

Stipend and Benefits: Full-time postdoctoral fellows will receive an annual stipend of $76,000 and a full benefits package that includes medical and dental insurance.
