Psychology Intern Leave
Interns receive benefits similar to those of other employees at the agency. This includes, but is not limited to; medical insurance, liability insurance, paid leave, holiday time, and mileage reimbursement. Specifics regarding the available leave time, observed holidays, and the process for requesting leave is included in the individual site benefits orientation at the beginning of the internship training year.
Submitting Leave Requests
Interns must submit leave requests through their individual site request policy. Once approved, the intern will then track the leave time as an internship activity, Support/Leave, on their timesheet via NPTC timesheet portal rather than a “request.” Supervisors will need to pay close attention to the intern’s timesheet in the NPTC timesheet portal to ensure that the leave activities listed on the timesheet matches actual leave requests in the local system. All leave and holidays provided to the interns are included in the intern total hour requirements. Your site may offer different types of leave such as PTO, sick leave, professional development leave, etc. Any leave time outside of these provided hours will need to be approved and may be subject to unpaid leave, which would cause an extension of internship.
Floating Holidays or Personal Holidays
Some sites may offer Floating Holidays or Personal Holidays as part of the interns’ leave. If a site offers a Floating/Personal Holiday, the intern should track this time as Support/Leave on their timesheet via NPTC timesheet portal rather than a “request.”
Psychology Intern Extended Leave
Extended leave is defined as a psychology intern’s inability to perform regular duties over a period of time that would exceed that covered by vacation and sick leave time. While there is no formal policy for intern extended leave provisions, NPTC is committed to working with interns to develop flexible plans for leaving and returning to work. NPTC and the placement site will pursue arrangements that are logistically possible, cause minimal disruption to the services offered, and do not impede the intern’s ability to complete the internship program in the required time frame. In many cases, extended leave for medical / maternity / paternity reasons results in an extension of the internship. Details regarding this extension will be discussed with the intern, the site, and the NPTC Administrative Office. If questions arise regarding any of these matters, interns should contact the NPTC Administrative Office for assistance in resolving the matter.
