Our Mission

To inspire and elevate through comprehensive treatment – one patient at a time.

About Our Site

Pacific Rehabilitation Centers was started in 1984 by a physical therapist, an orthopedic surgeon, a psychologist and a nurse vocational counselor after being frustrated with the limited options for injured workers in the state of Washington. They dreamed of a multidisciplinary program with clinicians working together, focused on getting patients back to work.

Fast forward almost 40 years and not only are we still here; we have three specialized rehabilitation centers, dozens of dedicated team members and have helped hundreds of Washingtonians get back to work.

Training Opportunities

Interns will provide clinical services at our three locations in-person or virtual.  For example, an intern could potentially be located at our Puyallup location providing virtual group and evaluation services to patients located in Puyallup.  There may be some travel, but the primary location will be based out of Puyallup where Dr. Cruz, the primary supervisor, is located.  We are accepting two interns for the current internship cycle.  Interns will have the opportunity to work with a diverse interdisciplinary team which includes physicians, psychologists, vocational counselors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, nurse practitioners, and interpreters.

Primary intern responsibilities and training will include providing individual and group therapy as well as conducting brief psychological evaluations. Each location provides the same opportunities with the same patient demographics.

Rotation Schedules

Interns will primarily be based in our Puyallup location where Dr. Cruz is located.  Services can be provided virtually to the other locations, and depending on need and intern interest their may be the options to travel to other sites to provide services.  At this time we anticipate services will be provided at the Puyallup location.  Interns can expect to start their day at 8:00 am, and their may be some flexibility regarding start times depending on intern and clinic need.  Interns will work an eight hour shift with a 30 minute meal break, and two 15 minute breaks throughout their shift.  Evening and weekend work will not be required.  A typical day would involve running rehabilitation groups and providing individual sessions as needed.  There will also be opportunities to observe clinical interviews, complete clinical interviews, and write assessments.

We frequently see individuals who have an adjustment disorder diagnosis and PTSD associated with their injury or injuries.  Infrequently, these diagnoses can be more severe including a diagnosis of major depression or generalized anxiety disorder.  We do get some clients who have suffered a mild traumatic brain injury and they may have neurocognitive symptoms that impact functioning.

Our Supervisors

While we won’t know your exact supervisor assignments until the internship starts, these are examples of some of the individuals you may work with over the course of your year at the site.

Site Training Director

Jessica Cruz, PhD

Dr. Cruz (She/Her) has a background in neuropsychology and forensic psychology.  Currently, she works at Pacific Rehabilitation Centers as a neuropsychologist resident completing the training required for board certification in neuropsychology.  She is also the training director and provides clinical supervision to supervisees.  Dr. Cruz also has a position at the state psychiatric hospital completing forensic risk evaluations.  She graduated with her PhD in clinical psychology from Fielding Graduate University in 2021.  Her primary research interests are in the neuropsychological assessment of dispositional mindfulness.
Dr. Cruz was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, and when she is not working she enjoys spending time with her family.

Life in Yakima County…

Puyallup and the surrounding regions are a wonderful place to live and visit.  There are areas in Tacoma, Spanaway, and Parkland that are less than ideal so please reach out to Dr. Cruz about what areas to avoid.  Seattle is a lovely city, but housing prices can be expensive and traffic can be a problem when commuting.  Public transportation is growing, and there are options to and from Seattle but transit within the smaller communities (e.g., Puyallup) is less than ideal.

    Employment Requirements

Interns will need to pass criminal background checks, drug screening, and documentation they are up to date on vaccinations, including COVID-19, as a condition of employment. Despite vaccination checks, there are no required vaccinations as a condition of employment. Regarding drug screening the following drugs are what we test for as part of the drug screening: codeine/morphine, marijuana metabolites, MDMA/MDA, amphetamines, meth, cocaine metabolites, PCP, and 6-Acetylmorphine.

    Intern Selection Process

Dr. Cruz and additional members of the clinical team will be responsible for reviewing applications.  We will be looking for individuals who have an interest in providing rehabilitation and health psychology services.  Interns do not need to be bilingual in Spanish, but having some knowledge of the Spanish language and culture is a plus.  Interns definitely need to be prepared to work with interpreter services.

    Interview Process

In-person and virtual interviews will be available based on preference and need.  The interview itself will last approximately 1 hour.  We will schedule interviews as needed with applicants.  Dr. Cruz will be conducting the interviews and shew will want to discuss previous training experiences, long-term goals and motivations, and their interest in rehabilitation psychology.

    COVID-19 Response

We generally provide in-person services, but we have the option to adjust to a virtual or hybrid format.  Currently, one of our psychologist provides groups for patients onsite virtually.  Mask are not required and they are optional based on preference, and this may change based on recommendations from the CDC.
