About Our Site
Royal Oaks is a 54-bed acute care inpatient facility located in Windsor, MO which treats individuals aged 3-65+. Windsor is a centrally located rural, Midwestern community of approximately 3,000 residents with a largely agricultural economy and several large Mennonite and Amish communities. Royal Oaks Hospital provides outpatient psychiatry services and acute inpatient care. The inpatient units are kept full the majority of the time due to the revolving door process in place for admits and discharges. The most commonly seen diagnoses at the hospital include Major Depressive Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, ADHD, Adjustment Disorder, Substance Use, Personality Disorders, Psychosis, and Bipolar Disorder.
Royal Oaks proudly works with other mental health professionals to ensure that the most appropriate care is available and provided to each patient. Royal Oaks is licensed by the Missouri Department of Health, accredited by the DNV, and is certified by CMS for the participation in Medicare and Medicaid programs. Royal Oaks is an approved facility for multiple insurance panels and provider networks.
Royal Oaks Hospital has two rotations available for match:

- Dual Track Royal Oaks Hospital / Compass Health – Butler or Warrensburg (Match # 192520)
Royal Oaks Hospital is located in Windsor, Missouri. Dual track interns would split their time between Windsor, Missouri and the Compass Health office in either Butler or Warrensburg, Missouri. Training experiences for the Dual track at both locations will be similar to full-time interns except that they will be working both inpatient and outpatient. Training Opportunities

A caseload of four to six patients will be carried on each rotation as well as conducting five to ten clinical groups per week, family therapy, and treatment team. Once a month weekend work will occur on all rotations. The Monday before or after weekend work will be given off to the scheduled intern. Interns may engage in psychological testing during any of their rotations, but interns will have a specific rotation dedicated to testing. A minimum of ten psychological assessments will be completed during this rotation. During some rotations, interns will participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team led by an Attending Psychiatrist. Other members of the treatment team include psychologists, registered nurses, licensed professional counselors, clinical social workers, expressive therapists, educators, utilization review staff and a clinical case manager. Interns not only present case conceptualizations but will also convey findings of psychological testing.
Interns utilize both hands-on training as well as web-based training programs. The agency offers a full training library of web-based programs for the interns and staff to access as they are able based on their licenses/interests. Interns will provide lectures to Royal Oaks and Compass Health staff.
Interns can also apply for the dual track between Royal Oaks and Compass Health, Butler or Warrensburg. There are three positions for the dual track. Interns in these positions will divide their time at Royal Oaks and Compass Health’s Butler or Warrensburg offices. Training experiences at both locations will be similar to full-time interns except that they will be working both inpatient and outpatient. Rotation Schedule
Interns at Royal Oaks Hospital will typically work an 8:30 am – 5:00 pm schedule each week except that once each month, interns will provide services Friday evening and Saturday and/or Sundays. On this weekend, interns will work from 5:00 – 8:00 pm Friday and all day on Saturday and/or Sunday. On these weeks, interns will be given the Monday before or after the weekend off in exchange for working.
Interns will also rotate units every three months of internship, though the schedule remains the same for each. In general, interns on all rotations will carry a caseload of four to six patients as well as conducting five to ten clinical groups per week, family therapy, treatment team, and assessment referrals.

Supervised Experiences
The most commonly seen diagnoses/supervised experiences that interns can expect to be working with at this location include, but are not limited to, Major Depressive Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, ADHD, Adjustment Disorder, Substance Use, Personality Disorders, Psychosis, and Bipolar Disorder.
Patient Population
Royal Oaks Hospital is located in Windsor, Missouri which is a rural farm town with a population of 2,785 individuals. Those living in the area are primarily Caucasian and there is an Amish community. Kansas City is one and a half hours north-west and Whiteman AFB is about 20 miles away.
Being located in a rural area, the location of the hospital is often a barrier for patients. Also, many families do not have the resources to attend family sessions in person, so use of telehealth for this modality is frequent. The most commonly seen diagnoses at this location include mood disorders, thought disorders, substance use disorders, ADHD, parent/child relational issues, trauma, and various personality disorders. At times, Royal Oaks will provide services to individuals from ethnic and religious groups that are not part of the majority for the Central Missouri area.

Site Training Director
Dr. Patrick Fletcher attended Wright State University’s School of Professional Psychology to receive his doctorate in psychology, graduating in the Summer of 2019. Dr. Fletcher completed both his internship and post-doctoral training at Royal Oaks Hospital prior to being hired at the hospital as a Licensed Psychologist in the Winter of 2019. Dr. Fletcher serves as the Testing Director for the hospital, providing psychological assessments, training, and supervision. Dr. Fletcher primarily utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, and Person-Centered techniques when providing individual and group therapies. Dr. Fletcher maintains a passion for providing effective and supportive supervision for trainees, for reducing stigma in mental health, and for relieving problematic symptoms associated with irrational thoughts.
Supervisors
Tenea Lowman, Psy.D.
Dr. Lowman received her master’s and doctorate degrees from Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Missouri. She completed her pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral residency at Royal Oaks Hospital in Windsor, Missouri. She has experience in residential and acute care inpatient settings with children and adolescents, adult acute care inpatient, community mental health, private practice, and hospice care. Dr. Lowman is currently the Vice President of Clinical Services. As training director, Dr. Lowman supervises the training and development of psychological interns, residents, and trainees. Her clinical interest is group therapy and psychosis. She has been adjunct faculty at the School of Professional Psychology at Forest Institute and was a board member for Child Safe of Central Missouri from 2016 to 2019 and currently serves on the Special Projects Committe for the Bothwell Hospital Foundation. Dr. Lowman is a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Missouri.
Carrie French, Psy.D.
Dr. French received her doctorate degree from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky and received her master’s degree from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. She completed her internship and post-doctoral residency with Royal Oaks Hospital with a focus on psychological testing and working with individuals with developmental disabilities. She has experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. In the past she has provided psychological services in inpatient, outpatient, school, residential, home, community, and primary care settings. Currently, Dr. French is serving as the Director of the High Acuity Unit Program and provides clinical services on the High Acuity Unit, Adolescent Units, and Pre-Adolescent Units. While completing her post-doctoral residency Dr. French has provided training, individual supervision, and group supervision to psychological interns and has a passion for training and supervision. Her primary clinical interests are working with individuals from underserved populations, individuals with developmental disabilities, and individuals with severe emotional and behavioral symptoms.
Life in Windsor, MO
Living in rural, Central Missouri can provide a slower pace and cost effective life style. Interns typically reside in Clinton, Warrensburg, or Sedalia MO. All three towns are within 30 minutes of Windsor. The University of Central Missouri is located in Warrensburg and State Fair Community College in Sedalia. Walmart and varies grocery stores can be located in all three towns as well as health care, fitness and community centers, and a variety of restaurants with a local taste and chains. Agriculture and manufacturing is a large economical focal point for this portion of Missouri.
Windsor, MO, located in Henry County, has a population of 3,000 and is 90 miles southeast of Kansas City, 90 miles southwest of Columbia, MO and 100 miles north of Springfield, MO. A portion of the Katy Trail runs through Windsor so it is common to view cyclists riding from one side of Missouri to the other. It is not uncommon to view the Stealth fly over Windsor as it is housed as Whiteman Airforce base 15 miles away from Windsor.

Royal Oaks Hospital has support staff on-site available to assist the interns. They also utilize both hands-on training as well as web-based training programs. Their web-based training program offers a full training library for our staff to access as they are able based on their licenses/interests. They also offer a wide range of psychological assessment and scoring materials.
Due to the distance required to travel to Didactic training each month, Royal Oaks Hospital provides travel reimbursement and mileage for intern travel expenses during quarterly in-person didactics.

- Unsatisfactory background check where actions and/or crimes which prohibit patient/client contact pursuant to state law and regulations of accrediting entities.
- Found to be convicted of, guilty of, pleaded guilty to or nolo contendere to any of the following crimes:
- Physical abuse of Class I Neglect of a patient, resident, or client
- Furnishing unfit food to patients, residents, or clients
- Is listed on the DMH disqualification registry
- Is listed on the employee disqualification list of the Department of Health and Senior Services or Department of Social Services
- Failure of a specified professional to report suspected abuse or neglect of a patient
- Found to be convicted of, guilty of, pleaded guilty to or nolo contendere to any of the listed felonies in the following website: http://dmh.mo.gov/about/employeedisqualification/
- Found guilty or pleaded guilty to a violation of Driving While Intoxicated or Driving with Excessive Blood Alcohol Content and who is found by the court to be an aggravated (3 or more) or chronic (4 or more) violator.

Please note that a criminal background check that reveals an intern’s past alcohol or drug-related crimes does not automatically release an intern from match. If otherwise qualified, if two (2) years have passed since the intern was convicted or found guilty and they are not currently on probation or parole, the intern is still eligible to be matched.
Interns with Royal Oaks Hospital will be required to verify immunization to MMR, Varicella (Chicken Pox Vaccine), and Hepatitis B during the onboarding process. Interns will also be required to receive the annual influenza vaccine unless they have an approved medical or religious exemption. Starting October 2021, all employees (including interns) will be required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine unless granted an approved accommodation. New employees must receive their first dose of COVID-19 vaccination prior to the 1st day of Orientation and receive their second dose (unless they received a one dose vaccination) within the first 30 days of hire. Reasonable accommodations for vaccine requirements are allowed.
Intern Selection Process
The Training Director, Supervisors, current interns, and Postdoctoral Residents review all interested applicants. The selection committee initially looks for individuals with a Master’s degree and eliminates applicants based on the following criteria:

- History of legal complications
- Personal academic probation
- Released from a prior internship site
- Inappropriate disclosure made in applicant material (i.e. sexual experiences of self or others)
Those who appear to be an appropriate fit in the hospital setting will be invited for an interview. The selection committee is likely to rank those interviewees who appear to be well rounded as an individual not just as a soon-to-be psychologist. Applicants who have good self-care, who are interested in professional development and skill set, and who can work independently as well with an interdisciplinary team are preferred.
COVID-19 Response
Royal Oaks Hospital follows CDC guidelines for COVID-19 safetly protocols. At this time all employees are required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status or location within the building. Employees are also asked to maintain social distancing, unvaccinated employees are assessed for COVID-19 symptoms at the start of each work day. Additional cleaning measures and use of UV lights is still being implemented across the site. All patients are tested for COVID-19 on admission and there is an isolation unit for patients who test positive for COVID-19 while there. COVID-19 testing and vaccines are available to all employees. Due to the inpatient nature of the facility, all services at this site are provided in-person with no availability for work from home or telehealth. As of October 2021, all employees (including interns) will be required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine unless granted an approved accommodation.
