E.04.24.GL – Centerstone Training Manual Addendum

Site Learning Activities and Requirements #

All interns will participate in the internship learning activities as specified in the manual. Specific site activities/rotations/requirements above and beyond what is listed in the manual are provided below:

Interns will participate in treatment team meetings by accompanying the supervising psychologist. This provides interns with the ability to engage in assisting teams with staffing difficult cases while also observing the processes involved in providing integrated care in community mental health across multiple settings. Interns, along with the Training Director, will develop a learning plan in the beginning of the internship year in order to identify areas of interest and focus for training. While interns will gain experience across all service lines offered at Centerstone, they may choose to focus and spend more time in particular areas of interest as team members in a multidisciplinary model. Primary intervention modalities can include group and/or individual psychotherapy, as well as assessment opportunities. As a broad overview, the Columbus, Indiana Centerstone office provides services in the following team structures:

Our Traditional Interns will have the flexibility to choose placements to enhance skills in areas of interest or to explore new areas to gain experience and expertise. Interns have the options to change rotations, if desired quarterly or at the half waypoint in their intern year. Regardless of the placement, interns will integrate into multidisciplinary treatment teams providing individual or group psychotherapy as well as gaining valuable psychological testing experience.

Same Day Access Clinic: Interns will have the opportunity to conduct intake evaluations, develop a diagnosis and treatment plan, evaluate risk, and assesses the client’s level of need to determine appropriate services. Team members also provide crisis intervention when needed and may assist with arranging acute inpatient care in an appropriate facility or stabilizing the client and referring to the least restrictive mode of treatment. In addition, this team provides outpatient services for clients in need of psychotherapeutic intervention.

Child & Family Services: Offers services to children, adolescents, as well as their families. This team works closely with community organizations such as the local school district, the Department of Child Services, and Juvenile Probation. Interns will provide office based services or have the opportunity for placement in a school setting. Interns will be part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of Master’s level therapists, family support specialists, practicum students or Master’s level interns.

Adult & Family: Provides services to adults with chronic and persistent mental health needs, including a broad range of diagnoses. Interns will conduct outpatient individual and group psychotherapy services from the office or via telehealth. Interns will be a contributing member of a multidisciplinary team consisting of therapists, rehab specialists, health coaches, care coordinators, psychiatrists and nurse practitioners.

Addictions Services: The Addictions team members provide comprehensive interventions for substance use disorders on an outpatient basis or in two of our residential facilities. Interns will conduct evaluations, provide individual psychotherapy or co-facilitate group-based interventions (including Motivation for Change, Intensive Outpatient, Aftercare, Seeking Safety, and Dual Diagnosis groups). Interns are part of a multidisciplinary treatment team comprised of therapists, recovery coaches, peer recovery specialists, psychiatric staff and work closely with community referrals including probation and the Drug Court.

Stride Center: The Stride Center located in Columbus is a 24-hour a day walk in facility to provide services to community members experiencing a mental health or substance abuse crisis. The intern will provide assessments, referrals, crisis stabilization, and brief problem focused treatment in this dynamic setting.

Integrated Health: There will be two part time positions for our Traditional interns in our Federally Qualified Health Clinics to gain experience in Integrated Health. Interns will receive referrals from the medical or psychiatric practioners representing a broad range of diagnosis and issues. Interns will provide short term, problem focused treatment with patients presenting with serious mental health issues, psychological issues affecting compliance with medical treatment, sleep related issues or patients having difficulties with pain management. Interns will be available for warm handoffs from medical providers for immediate psychological interventions as well as providing consultation with medical staff on psychological issues when needed. The intern will be an integral part of the treatment team and attend team meetings or group supervision with other integrated health therapists.

Rural County Office: In lieu of the integrated health rotation (or in addition to), interns will have a 6 month to yearlong rotation in one of our surrounding county offices. Here the intern will gain experience working as a generalist psychologist in training in a small county office with a rural and underserved population. Interns will conduct intakes, crisis assessment, individual and group psychotherapy with adults and children, participate in team meetings, and have assessment opportunities, while functioning as a vital member of the team.

Psychological Testing: Interns are required to complete a number of psychological assessments with adults and children throughout the year to develop competency in this area.  Referrals will be from psychiatrists, nurse practitioners or clinical staff to provide diagnostic, personality or intelligence testing to aid in differential diagnosis or make appropriate treatment recommendations.

It is expected that the internship and training activities come first and any other roles/duties are secondary to the completion of the internship program.
