B.08.24 – Internship Vacation/Leave Policies

Psychology Intern Leave #

Interns receive from their site at least 14 days (112 hours) of combined vacation and sick leave time (represented as PTO hours) and at least 3 days (24 hours) of professional development time. Specifics regarding the available leave time, observed holidays, and the process for requesting leave is included in the individual site Training Manual Addendum.

Submitting Leave Requests #

Interns must submit leave requests through their individual site request policy. Once approved, the intern will then track the leave time as an internship activity, Support/PTO and Professional Development Leave, on their timesheet via NPTC web portal rather than a “request.” Supervisors will need to pay close attention to the intern’s timesheet in the NPTC web portal to ensure that the leave activities listed on the timesheet matches actual leave requests in the local system. All leave listed above is included in the intern total hour requirements. Any leave time outside of these provided hours will need to be approved and may be subject to unpaid leave, which would cause an extension of internship.

Professional Development #

Interns have opportunities to attend various conferences, psychological associations meetings, workshops, and seminars to present papers and participate in continuing education. In this way, they develop an appreciation for continuing education and lifelong learning. Attendance at such organizational meetings is considered important to the learning process; therefore, each site will provide at least three days of professional development leave. When this occurs, the intern will then track the leave time as an internship activity, Support/PTO and Professional Development Leave, on their timesheet via NPTC web portal rather than a “request.” Any additional training absences or changes to this schedule are left to the site Training Director’s discretion. If the professional development falls during the intern’s didactic training, the intern must follow the Missing Didactics policy in this manual.

Floating Holidays or Personal Holidays #

Some sites may offer Floating Holidays or Personal Holidays as part of the interns’ leave. If a site offers a Floating/Personal Holiday, the intern should track this time as Support/PTO and Professional Development Leave. However, they should contact Operations Support to indicate that this leave should be classified as a “floating holiday” or “personal holiday” and not be taken from their available PTO.

Psychology Intern Extended Leave #

Extended leave is defined as a psychology intern’s inability to perform regular duties over a period of time that would exceed that covered by vacation and sick leave time. While there is no formal policy for intern extended leave provisions, NPTC is committed to working with interns to develop flexible plans for leaving and returning to work. NPTC and the placement site will pursue arrangements that are logistically possible, cause minimal disruption to the services offered, and do not impede the intern’s ability to complete the internship program in the required time frame. In many cases, extended leave for medical / maternity / paternity reasons results in an extension of the internship. Details regarding this extension will be discussed with the intern, the site, and the NPTC Administrative Office. If questions arise regarding any of these matters, interns should contact the NPTC Administrative Office for assistance in resolving the matter.
