C.06.c.24 – Psychology Intern Quarterly Evaluation

Frequency

A formal evaluation of the intern will be completed by the Site Supervisor four times during the training year. Each evaluation will be based in part on direct observation by the supervisor legally responsible for the direct service being provided.

Minimum Level of Achievement

As this evaluation is made up of the nine required APA Profession-Wide Competencies, interns must receive scores in all areas each quarter. For successful completion of the internship program, interns are expected to:

Average at least a score of 2.5 in the second quarter (with no ratings of 1),
Average at least a score of 3 (Satisfactory Strength) in the third quarter (with no ratings of 1 or 2), and
Receive scores of at least 4 (Competent) on every item in the fourth quarter with no items rated 1 (Unfamiliar), 2 (Aware/Developing), or 3 (Satisfactory Strength).

These averages are per competency, and not based on the entire evaluation. Interns should also be assessed based on professionals already in practice, not based on the performance of other interns. It is intended that each quarterly evaluation represents a “snapshot” of the intern’s growth at each quarter through the year; thus evaluation scores should be based on where the intern is at the end of each quarter, not on where they averaged throughout the quarter. If the option “Not Trained” is selected at any point in the training year, the Supervisor will need to provide an explanation for why the intern has not been trained in that area during the reporting period and the plans to address the site deficiency in the upcoming quarter.

Process and Outcomes

These evaluations should be reviewed and signed by both the psychology intern and the supervisor(s) before submission, and the intern should have an opportunity to comment on any feedback. The evaluation is submitted via web form to Operations Support and is placed in the intern file. The supervisor is expected to solicit additional feedback from other individuals either at the site or with NPTC staff who would have additional information for evaluation purposes to inform their final evaluation scores. This includes, but is not limited to, assessment supervisors, group supervisors, and facilitators conducting any Clinical Supervision Exercises. The fourth and final evaluation covers the intern’s attitudes, skills, abilities, and growth toward competency during the internship year. Copies of each Psychology Intern Quarterly Evaluation will be sent to the Regional Training Director, the site Training Director (if not the Primary Supervisor), the Primary Supervisor, the intern, and the intern’s school. Failure to submit Psychology Intern Quarterly Evaluations in a timely manner may affect the intern’s grade and/or ability to graduate on time.

Interns receiving a 1 on any item during the second quarter or a 1 or a 2 in the third quarter may be placed on a performance improvement plan. Interns who do not successfully remediate or receive a 1, 2, or 3 in the fourth quarter will not be eligible for graduation.

If it is determined that scores given to an intern on any quarterly evaluation are inconsistent with the category definitions provided and/or contradict documentation or observations of intern abilities, NPTC reserves the right to change the intern’s evaluation scores to more appropriate designations. These changes would occur with direct communication with the Site Training Director, Supervisor (if appropriate), and intern.
