E.4.23.CEN – Burrell Behavioral Health IHC Grant Training Manual Addendum

All interns will participate in the internship learning activities as specified in the manual. Specific site activities/rotations/requirements above and beyond what is listed in the manual are provided below:

The bulk of the interns training experience will be in integrated healthcare, in the role of a behavioral health consultant. The interns will also complete a minor rotation in brief assessment and treatment planning. Through the course of both experiences, the intern will complete 10 integrated psychological assessments.

Behavioral Health Integration: As behavioral health consultants, interns will work as members of a multidisciplinary teams providing routine consultation and brief assessments and interventions with patients referred for same-day warm handoffs and follow-up care. They will conduct risk assessment and assist clinic staff with crisis management, engage clients in screening and brief assessment to establish patient goals and treatment plans, and provide interventions to address mental health and health and behavior problems. Interns will facilitate integrated patient care by working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, providing the teams with education about identification and treatment of behavioral health concerns, supporting referrals to specialty mental health as needed, and promoting positive working relationships between partners and Burrell Behavioral Health.

Outpatient Therapy:  This assignment will involve identifying patients in need of specialty mental health care within their primary care settings, then routing to themselves for follow up in outpatient therapy at a Burrell Behavioral Health location. They will learn about the pathway from primary care to specialty mental health, the benefits and challenges of coordinating with primary care as an outpatient clinician as compared to their roles as a BHC, and compare and contrast therapeutic interventions between their specialty mental health and primary care roles.

Additional internship experiences may include:

·         Participation in consultation teams with experienced behavioral health consultants

·         Participation in Burrell-sponsored research projects

·         Participation in integrated care round table discussions

·         Participation in program development and qualify improvement operations

·         Community presentations (internal and/or external)

The interns’ training and additional experiences will be highly influenced by their preferences and areas of interest.  It is expected that the internship and training activities come first and any other roles/duties are secondary to the completion of the internship program.
